Anxiety is not caused by a single factor alone. A combination of physical and environmental causes is responsible for the creation of an anxiety disorder. Scientists and researchers are learning more about anxiety and its causes with the help of new technologies available today and the increasing awareness about the problem.

As researchers learn more about the causes of anxiety, they will be able to provide better treatment and hopefully in future, they will be able to prescribe preventive measures also.

Chemical imbalances are thought to be among the causes of anxiety because it has been seen that patients of anxiety are usually helped by medications which alter the chemicals of the brain. The two main chemicals are serotonin and noradrenaline. Imbalance in these neurotransmitters is thought to be a cause of anxiety and depression. By regulating the level of neurotransmitters with the help of medication, the symptoms of anxiety are relieved. It is often seen that anxiety affects several members in a family. This strongly suggests that heredity could be cause of anxiety. People suffering from other disorders like drug abuse, depression, or other mental or emotional problems are more likely to suffer from anxiety. A traumatic experience can also cause anxiety. Sometimes typical traits of a person’s personality contribute in developing anxiety disorders. Some of these commonly found traits are lack of confidence and low self esteem. We all learn how to cope with stress by observing our family members and friends and other people who are around us. Whatever be the cause, anxiety can grow to such a stage when the fear of anxiety becomes the cause of an anxiety attack.
