Cold sores are caused generally by the herpes simplex virus, type I. It spreads by contact with a person having cold sores. The common triggers for cold sores are illnesses like cold and flu, fatigue and cold winds. Bright sunlight and fatigue can also trigger cold sores. Being emotionally upset can also trigger cold sores.
