Low Platelet or blood count/level can be caused by a number of reasons. These reasons are primarily divided into primary and secondary causes. Immune thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) is a blood disorder in which the immune system decreases the platelets. Among the secondary causes of the loss of platelets, a number of causes can be enumerated like being infected with hepatitis C, a chronic liver disease or taking certain medicines could also cause the loss of platelets. Chemotherapy is also one of the probable causes of low count of platelets. Aplastic anaemia in which the body stops producing required blood cells, could also be a reason behind the low level of platelets.
